Earlier this year, a team of 48 foot care specialists including doctors, nurses, aestheticians and pedicurists from the North American School of Podology, offered free foot-care to locals in St. Kitts and Nevis. The group of foot-care experts treated diabetic clients and offered leading-edge, professional foot-care to those in need during the humanitarian effort. The team of experts was led by Dr. Katharin Von Gavel- BSc Pod; DNM; DCh; founder of the North American School of Podology (NASP) and Vicki Malo – BscPod, MBA; president of NASP.

This special program is part of a residency for a Bachelor of Podology degree that offered free foot-care to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis, who are diabetic and in need of leading-edge, professional foot-care.

“It takes a special group of people to donate time, services and money for the health of feet. In the past 11 years since our first residency program on the island, we have experienced an exponential growth and a tremendous success of our program – which has literally improved the feet of hundreds of Kittitians – and keeps us coming back,” Dr. Von Gavel said in a press release.

This year more than 850 Kittitians received care during the five-day clinical program. Foot-care professionals and the graduating NASP students treated foot-related skin and nail conditions, including extreme rough and dry skin, heel fissures, severely thickened toenails, and other problematic feet.

The North American School of Podology is aligned with the International University of Health Science to continue NASP’s initiative of helping Kittitians with their foot-care needs. As part of the curriculum to obtain their degree, the NASP graduating class of 2017 offered at the hands-on clinic to help Kittitians with skin and nail-related foot problems. All clinics were offered free of charge. Free footwear was also provided to over 400 locals thanks to donations from National Shoe and several other educators and attendees who gathered gently-used shoes and sandals.

“Our mission is to change the quality and safety of pedicures one foot at a time. If we can help those in need of serious foot care, then we have taken the most gratifying steps, not only leading to our future success but also while contributing to the health of those with the greatest of needs,” Dr. Von Gavel said.
