How to Design Nail Services for KidsHow to Design Services for Kids

0
0

squareDon’t say “No” to kids; even the tiniest tips can boost your biz! Children love to imitate adults, whether they’re playing dress up, putting on makeup or pleading to stay up late. So it’s no surprise when they want a manicure too—just like mom! Our smallest customers deserve some big consideration when they take a seat across the nail table, legs swinging and eyes wondering. Services are basic and stripped down, but it’s important to energize them with other elements to keep kids engaged and, more importantly, relatively still. This month’s Workshop details how to perform children’s services, from polishing nails to the special touches that make kids beg their parents to bring them back for more.

Mini Manicure

1. Take your client to the nail polish section to pick out a polish before the service begins, then direct her to the sink to wash her hands with soap and water. Tell her to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice while she’s washing her hands to make sure she scrubs for long enough. Once you’re back at the nail table, use a file that’s no less than 180 grit to softly and slowly file her nails into a basic round shape—you don’t need anything too fancy for a child. Note: Children’s nails are tiny and delicate, and the same goes for their hands. A new file with sharp edges can easily cut into such young skin, so be sure to smooth the edges of your file before you begin.

npo_image014
2. Using scented lotion, lightly massage her forearm. Use light strokes; this step of the service is more for fun than it is for tension relief. She’ll love this part!

3. Prep for the manicure by swiping a cleanser over the nails to keep the polish from bubbling after the lotion.

npo_image007

4. Apply base coat to the nails. Then apply two coats of color to the nails. Note: If you’re using a glitter color, make it truly pop by applying a solid shade first that complements the glitter. For example, we layered a jade green shade under a shimmering blue glitter polish.

npo_image008
5. Kids love nail art! Decals make it quick and easy to embellish their nails. Keep a wide selection on hand: flowers, hearts, animals, etc. Ask your client to choose what decal she wants on her nails and carefully apply it with tweezers. To avoid smudging the nails, make sure the polish is dry before applying the decal. Apply top coat.

npo_image009
6. Dry nails quickly by using quickdry drops; this will help kids avoid smudges later, and you won’t have to worry about touch-ups.

npo_image010
Petite Pedicure

1. Rev up the pedicure spa, beca use your client will love soaking her feet to start the service. As always, make sure you follow your state board’s guidelines to clean and disinfect your pedicure spas. Allow your client to soak her feet for a few minutes, then dry them off with a clean terrycloth towel.
2. File and shape her nails with a new or properly disinfected file. Make sure to smooth out the edges on a new file to avoid cutting or scraping her delicate skin.
3. Apply base coat to the nails. Apply two coats of color. Once the polish is dry, add decals to her toes. Finish with a top coat to seal and protect the decals or other nail art.

Tool Kit

+ Small, Thin File (no lower than 180 grit)
+ Scented Lotion
+ Top/Base Coat
+ Nail Polish
+ Decals
+ Quick Dry Drops

HELPFUL HINTS

+  Double your client list by promoting services to your clients and their kids! Offer a special Mommy & Me Mani/Pedi spa day, and launch it during special holidays, like Mother’s Day.
+ Offer a fun, fruity drink to keep your client’s hands busy during her pedicure; think juices with crazy straws, colorful plastic cups and “exotic” drinks, like a Shirley Temple.
+ One small twitch can ruin a perfect polish job, especially with such tiny canvases as children’s nails. Hang a flat-screen TV on the wall behind your chair and play cartoons or children’s movies to keep kids from getting bored and fidgeting during their services.
+ Keep a wide selection of scented, colorful lotions at your station during a child’s manicure. Allow her to choose which one she would like during the hand massage—she’ll love making a big-girl decision!

FranziskaSay hello to Franziska Christensen, (aka @fanzis_com) a self-taught Danish nail artist and blogger. Get to know Franziska in our interview with her below:

Your Name: Franziska Christensen

Where in the world do you live?

I live in Denmark, Europe.

How would you describe yourself?

Ambitious, perfectionistic, dedicated and introvert.

Tell us about how you got started in the nail industry.

It all started 4 years ago, where I found out you could sprinkle loose glitter on to your nail polish. I googled “nail glitter” to find the nearest store to get it, and the webshop that appeared, also offered something called “nail gel.” I had to try it, and a few days after that, an unknown passion was awakened.

See a glitter gradient tutorial by Franziska »

What/Who inspires your work?

I run my blog on Fanzis, where I share my own work plus all the work I find beautiful from other great nailartists around the world. Almost everyone can become a nailtech, but it takes someone with a special talent, dedication and passion to become an artist. Those kind of people inspire me.

Tool(s) you can’t live without?

You really can’t live without a nipper for dead cuticles, cuticle oil and a nail file.

What tip can you offer to other nail technicians?

Quality before quantity, always. Use extra time for your work, if needed, and never compromise. Attract the customers who loves to see you work, and can sit for hours just because of that good atmosphere.

Anything else you’d like to add?

If anyone has got any requests for my next tutorial video, please let me know. And don’t forget to follow me on Instagram, Youtube, Pinterest and Facebook!

CND Creative Play PolishCND, the brand you trust for Shellac, Vinylux, and other professional nail products has just announced their brand new lacquer line, Creative Play. With 80 colors across 10 different finishes, the new Creative Play line is designed to let you experiment with art and color in a way that’s easy to layer, change, and remove.

“At CND, we are always looking for opportunities to elevate the standard in professional nail color,” says CND Co-founder and Style Director Jan Arnold. “Creative Play Nail Lacquer plays with dimension, pops with pigment and pushes outside the boundaries. This new line redefines traditional nail lacquer with color that breaks the rules through emotive, energized shades that allow you to express your individuality.”

Formulated with micronized pigments, this traditional three-step system delivers smooth, uniform application with high-gloss and richly saturated color. Developed for consumers who desire frequent color change, and to simultaneously serve the needs of the professional nail community, Creative Play Nail Lacquer offers flawless results with minimal effort for the ultimate color story every time.

These polishes are 7-free, which means they’re free of toluene, camphor, formaldehyde, phthalates (DBP), formaldehyde resin, xylene, and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). They remove easily with CND Nourishing Remover and come in a whole range of finishes: holographic glitter, metallic, metallic glitter, micro glitter, multi-color glitter, pearl, satin, shimmer and transformer.

Trend Alert: Japanese Bubble Nail ArtTrend Alert: Japanese Bubble Art

20160309_111317Forget the “hump nails” or “bubble nails” you saw shared all over Facebook last summer – this take on bubble nail art trend is one you’ll actually want to try.

Many Japanese nail artists are doing nails of a shorter length in whimsical bright neon or pastel colors, then adding large orbs filled with gemstones on the accent nail near the cuticle.

A photo posted by Lim Meijun (@mj__nails) on

Cuccio Educator Marilyn Garcia recreated the look herself using a few of her favorite products. Garcia went with Cuccio clear self-leveling gel and a dropper to make the spheres. To fill the orb, she used Cina Nail Creations Selfies in a handful of colors – you can even use these to decorate the surface of other nails if you wish!

The result: a bright, bubbly manicure ready for spring!bubble-cuccio

1. Apply Gelish Foundation and cure.
2. Apply Gelish in Mint Icing and cure after each layer (apply two). Leave one finger free to create your foamy beer accent nail.
3. On your free finger, apply Gelish in Arctic Freeze and cure
4. Apply Gelish in Bronzed on top of the white nail, cure and apply again for a total of two Bronzed layers.
5. With a dotting tool, create three dots in random positions on the tip of the Bronzed nail and connect with curved lines, filling in all spaces to create the look of the top of a beer. Cure.
6. Apply Gelish Top It Off, cure, and clean with Gelish Nail Surface Cleanse. Finish off with Gelish Nourish Cuticle Oil.

Shamrock Shake-up

St Patrick's Day - Shamrock Shake-up - Elizabeth Garcia 2

1. Apply Gelish Foundation and cure.

2. Apply a coat of Gelish in Mint of Spring and cure. Repeat with second coat.
3. Do not clean. Take your wedge sponge and apply Gelish in Mint Icing on the corner of your sponge and press it softly on the nail tip. Repeat twice and cure both times.
4. Apply Gelish in Bronzed to your sponge and press softly to the middle section of your nail tip towards your cuticle.
5. Apply more of Bronzed to your sponge and press softly applying only in the middle section of the nail, creating another ombre layer with your glitter gel polish.
6. Apply Mint Icing once more on your sponge and apply it only to the edge of your nail, making it the darkest section of your nail.
7. Apply Gelish Top It Off, cure, and clean with Gelish Nail Surface Cleanse. Finish off with Gelish Nourish Cuticle Oil.

Lucky Charms

St Patrick's Day - Lucky Charms - Elizabeth Garcia

1. Apply Gelish Foundation and cure.
2. Apply Gelish in Dear Johnny Green and cure. Apply once more and cure again.
3. For the dots, you can either create them using Gelish in Bronzed, or, use Gelish Structure Gel as a glue. To do so, drop a circular dot on the center of each nail (do not cure). Then, place a gold rhinestone stud on top of each and cure.
4. Use Bronzed along with a dotting tool and place more dots and studs on both sides next to the center stud. Repeat on all fingers.
6. Darken dots by adding another coat and cure.
7. Apply Gelish Top It Off, cure and clean with Gelish Nail Surface Cleanse. Finish off with Gelish Nourish Cuticle Oil.

CND collaborated with fashion powerhouse VIN+OMI for their A/W ‘16 London Fashion Week show.

The fashion collection, entitled “Colourotic” is based on CND’s award-winning Vinylux Weekly Polish colors and was inspired by the close connection between the two innovative, fashion-forward brands. Shared the designer, “This season we have worked very closely with our nail sponsor CND to bring 34 of their colors to life on the runway. The hardest thing was choosing from their great color range.”

Each of the 34 runway looks was named after the shade it was based on, from Bicycle Yellow to Black Pool. While the VIN+OMI design team hand-selected fabric based on their chosen color range, the Daniel Galvin hair team used over 450 bottles of Vinylux Weekly Polish to dye the wigs worn on the runway to ensure a perfect match.

  • VIN+OMI CND Fashion Week

Created by a team of CND Education Ambassadors renowned for their creativity, knowledge and skill level, the nails demonstrated the endless possibilities of nail design using CND’s product range. The talented Runway team consisted of 7 CND Education Ambassadors (Fee Wallace, Kirsti Gammon, Samantha Birkett-Leigh, Kayley Cairns, Liza Smith, Jeni Smith, Susan McGirl) and a CND Nail Stylist (Nickie Rhodes-Hill).

“Curating the runway looks was a direct collaboration between each of our nail stylists and the designers themselves,” said Samantha Sweet, Co-Founder of Sweet Squared (CND’s UK distributor). “The color themed concepts pushed for structural, sculpted designs. By allowing each CND Stylist to create their designs independently, we were able to ensure designs were individually inspired by each of their experiences of the collection and interaction with the designers, resulting in 34 unique yet cross-linking nail designs.”

How to Fix Weak, Splitting NailsHow to Fix Weak, Splitting

0

Fixer-Uppers-NP216-2-Getty

Soft or brittle nails that easily crack, chip, split or peel are quite common, but there isn’t always an underlying cause. Often it’s the result of contact with moisture. “When hands are immersed in water, the moisture content of nails increases and, as a result, the nails become soft. This excess water is quickly lost upon exposure to a dry atmosphere,” explains Adriana Schmidt, M.D., a dermatologist at the Santa Monica Dermatology Group in Santa Monica, California. “Repeated wetting and drying leads to a lack of adhesion between the cells of the nail plate and splits develop.” What’s more, splitting may be more pronounced in longer nails, which have more surface area. To help, techs can trim nails short, avoid acetone or acetone-based polish removers and apply nail hardener, Schmidt suggests.

You may also consider recommending waterless manis to these clients to avoid worsening the issue. “Then, retail a deeply moisturizing hand cream with glycerin, lactic acid or urea,” she adds. Additionally, a quality cuticle oil is advised and, at home, clients should apply the cream and oil to the cuticles and rub it in daily. It’s also a good idea for clients who are susceptible to weak or splitting nails to wear gloves when working with water or chemicals.

Shares Schoon, “As a rule, solvents removers work much faster when they are warmed by just 10°F (8°C).” Second, because it speeds up the removal process and helps the gel or acrylic peel away from the nail more efficiently, it reduces the harm done from impatient peeling and prying.

Looking to add something to your retail counter that your clients don’t already have? Starting April 2016, China Glaze is launching their own Coloured Nail Spray. Sure, it’s no replacement for a traditional manicure, but it’s a cute and easy way to paint nails ridiculously fast – and a perfect impulse buy or gift item. You paint a special base coat on nails, spray them, then wash – the spray comes off skin and cuticles but sticks to the nails. Right now, China Glaze is offering their Coloured Nail Spray in four shades: Magenta Shimmer, Purple Shimmer, Platinum Silver, and Bright Blue.

Here’s how it works:

STICK: Apply China Glaze Strong Adhesion Base Coat on a clean nail and let dry completely. Be careful to avoid the cuticles – where base coat sticks, color stays!

SPRAY: Spray two light layers of China Glaze Coloured Nail Spray on all nails. Allow to dry completely between coats.

SEAL: Apply China Glaze Fast Forward Top Coat and allow to dry. Again, be careful to avoid the cuticles – this step seals on the Coloured Nail Spray.

SUDS: Wash hands with soap and water. Coloured Nail Spray stays on your nails, not on your hands!

Bellacures Nail Salon shares how to get the “Politicure” featuring either an elephant or donkey, depending on your client’s political leanings.

repub

Here’s how:

1. Paint all nails red or blue depending on your political preference, leaving one nail unpainted.

2. Paint the unpainted nail an opaque white like OPI Alpine Snow.

3. Let the white nail fully dry.

4. Use these images to help you draw a simple elephant or donkey in red and blue on the nail that is painted solid white.  Use a thin paint brush for precision. You can draw small white dots as as details instead of stars, or use nail glue to adhere small rhinestones for a little bling.

5. Let the nail art fully dry for 20 minutes.

6. Apply top coat on all nails, and voila, the politicure!
